From housekeeper to nursing assistant
Candace looks to advance her career at VMC
During the summer of 2009, American Radioworks, the national documentary unit of American Public Media, came to VMC to complete a radio documentary titled “Workplace U”. The story features three alternative education programs, including the HEET program: Health Employees Education and Training. One of the three stories features Candace who works at Valley Medical Center in housekeeping. Through her participation in HEET, Candace passed the certification test to become a nursing assistant. A producer with American Radioworks spent a day at VMC shadowing Candace, and capturing sound bites, while she performed tasks related to her job. Candace was chosen by American Radioworks because of a speech she gave at a conference last summer about what the HEET program has meant to her.
