Perioperative Nursing is a specialty area that requires both extensive knowledge and skills acquired through a comprehensive didactic and clinical program. Many institutions around the Puget Sound area provide extensive perioperative educational and clinical programs to develop perioperative registered nurses. This is costly, as it requires each institution to provide time to develop, setup, and run these programs, and is time-consuming for the Clinical Nurse Specialists/Nurse Educator. There are institutions in the area that do not have adequate resources to offer such programs. In light of shortage of nurses in general and particularly in specialty areas such as Perioperative Nursing and the need to educate new OR nurses, a Perioperative Consortium Program that pools resources is vital.
The Northwest Perioperative Internship Program has been established with the following goals:
1. To broaden availability and sharing of expertise of perioperative nurse educators/Clinical nurse specialists.
2. To reduce duplication of efforts in programs offered individually.
3. To establish a community standard for the Perioperative Nursing education program.
4. To reduce program costs to each of the consortium members.
5. To provide easy access to a quality Perioperative Nursing education program for the community RNs.
