Tips for Preventing SIDS
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden death of an infant under 1 year of age that remains unexplained. It is also known as crib death.
In the United States about 7,000 babies die of SIDS every year. Most researchers now believe babies who die of SIDS are born with one or more conditions that make them especially vulnerable to stresses that occur in the normal life of an infant.
Although researchers cannot point to a specific cause, these steps may help prevent SIDS:
- Always place baby on his back to sleep.
- Remove soft bedding from baby's crib—fluffy blankets, sheepskin, and pillows.
- Keep baby's room at a comfortable temperature, but not overly warm.
- Dress baby in a sleeper suit instead of using blankets. Use warmer fabrics during cold months or if you keep your house temperature at less than 68°F.
- Consider breastfeeding your baby to ensure that she gets the proper antibodies and nutrients.
- Keep your baby's areas free of cigarette smoke.
