RENTON, WA -- The Joint & Spine Center at Valley Medical Center (VMC) has once again received national recognition from Regence BlueShield for its expertise inSpine Surgery, and Knee and Hip Replacement. For the second consecutive year, VMC has been designated a Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery, and Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement for meeting quality standards and delivering positive patient outcomes.
Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate an expertise in quality care, resulting in better overall outcomes for patients, by meeting objective clinical measures developed with input from expert physicians and medical organizations. To date, Valley Medical Center is one 310 Blue Distinction Centers nationwide for Spine Surgery, and one of 540 Blue Distinction Centers nationwide for Knee & Hip Replacement.
The Blue Distinction designations are a tool to help consumers find quality specialty care on a consistent basis, while enabling and encouraging healthcare professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of care, nationwide.
To be designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery and a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement the following criteria* were evaluated:
- Patient outcomes
- Treatment expertise
- Procedure volume
- Structure (types of services provided, such as ER, diagnostic testing; support departments such as radiology, nutrition, rehab; and use of clinical registry data systems)
- Process (use of evidence-based care, systematic post-procedure follow up, quality improvement processes

Blue Distinction® is a designation awarded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality healthcare in the areas of spine surgery, knee and hip replacement bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers, and transplants. The designation is based on rigorous, evidence-based, objective selection criteria established with input from expert physicians and medical organizations. Its goal is to help consumers find quality specialty care on a consistent basis, while enabling and encouraging healthcare professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of care nationwide.
