A rheumatologist is an internist who is qualified by additional training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles and bones. Rheumatologists conduct research to determine the cause and to develop better treatments for these disabling and sometimes fatal diseases.

The Rheumatology Clinic at Valley Medical Center diagnoses and treats inflammatory arthritis and other autoimmune disorders affecting the joints, muscles and bones, including: rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, Lupus, Scleroderma, Myositis, Sjogren's syndrome, and Polymyalgia rheumatica, as well as other autoimmune diseases.

    Biography

    Billie Atwood, ARNP, received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, and her Masters of Nursing, Family Practice from Brigham Young University in Utah. Her clinical experience includes working for a number of specialty clinics, including orthopedics, neurology, family practice and urgent care. Prior to joining the Rheumatology Clinic, Ms. Atwood managed Valley Medical Center's nationally recognized Joint Center and served as a staff nurse responsible for the care of surgical patients emerging from anethesia.

    Biography

    V. Joyce Gauthier, MD, PhD, received her medical degree and PhD in immunology from the University of Washington. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Cornell Medical School in New York, and her fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Washington. Dr. Gauthier worked with Valley Orthopedics Associates before joining Valley Medical Center in 2008. Dr. Gauthier specializes in early detection and treatment of autoimmune disorders and inflammatory arthritis. She is passionate about ecotourism and travels extensively in Alaska.
