A rheumatologist is specialist who is qualified by additional training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles and bones. Rheumatologists conduct research to determine the cause and to develop better treatments for these disabling and sometimes fatal diseases.

The Rheumatology Clinic at Valley Medical Center diagnoses and treats inflammatory arthritis and other autoimmune disorders affecting the joints, muscles and bones, including: rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, scleroderma, myositis, Sjogren's syndrome, and polymyalgia rheumatica, osteoporosis, tendonitis, bursitis, and gout.

    Biography

    Billie Atwood, ARNP, received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, and her Masters of Nursing, Family Practice from Brigham Young University in Utah. Her clinical experience includes working for a number of specialty clinics, including orthopedics, neurology, family practice and urgent care. Prior to joining the Rheumatology Clinic, Ms. Atwood managed Valley Medical Center's nationally recognized Joint Center and served as a staff nurse responsible for the care of surgical patients emerging from anesthesia.

    Biography

    Laura Grantham, PA-C, practices general rheumatology seeing patients with all manners of inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, pseudogout, systemic lupus, mixed connective tissue disease, ankylosing spondylitis, scleroderma, polymyalgia rheumatica, Sjogren’s Syndrome, myositis, sarcoidosis, and inflammatory vasculitis syndromes.

    Laura is excited about the important advances that have occurred in rheumatology over the past two decades and believes in bringing the best evidence-based medicine to her patients. She is passionate about learning about the lives of her patients in order to provide exemplary treatments that improve quality of life on a personal level. She graduated from Duke University in 2014 with her Masters in Health Science completing their Physician Assistant Program. Prior to her education at Duke she worked as an Athletic Trainer for 9 years.

    Laura moved to Washington in 2016. Prior to living in Washington, she had been many places due her father’s Naval career. She feels that Washington is the most beautiful place that she has lived with wonderful people. Outside of work Laura enjoys hiking, reading, yoga, gardening, cheering on the Duke Blue Devils, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.

    Caner Sakin MD earned his medical degree at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Rheumatology at the Ohio State University Medical Center. He practices general rheumatology.

    Biography

    Amritpal Sandhu, MD, is board-certified in Rheumatology, and treats patients with inflammatory arthritis and systemic lupus erythematous (SLE), and he also has a special interest in osteoporosis.

    Dr. Sandhu completed his medical school training at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana,India and did his internal medicine residency at St. Joseph hospital, Chicago. His fellowship in Geriatrics was completed at University of Illinois, Chicago. He completed his Rheumatology fellowship at University of Mississippi and stayed on as assistant professor for four years prior to moving to Washington. He is a Fellow of American college of Rheumatology.

    Patient Philosophy: “Treatment of inflammatory arthritis has changed significantly in last 15-20 years. My goal is early diagnosis of the type of arthritis and initiation of treatment to prevent further damage to the joints. I believe in empowering my patients with the latest knowledge and research about different disease states which helps in medical decision making and keeping them functional to enjoy life to the fullest.”

    Pedro Trujillo, MD, earned his medical degree from the Universidad Industrial de Santander in Columbia. He performed his residency at Tulane University and a fellowship at the University of Washington.

    With more than 25 years in practice, Dr. Trujillo has extensive expertise in systemic inflammatory disorders, including autoimmune and metabolic diseases manifested as crystal arthritis. He is an expert in ultrasound-guided intra-articular joint injections. Dr. Trujillo is board certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

    After his fellowship in the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Trujillo traveled across the country and practiced at The Cleveland Clinic in Fort Lauderdale, FL before returning back to the Seattle area.
