    Biography

New Patients, Please Note: Mary EllenMaccio, MD is accepting only obstetrics patients at this time.

The focus of my medical practice is women's health: complete obstetric care and office gynecology. But as a family physician I bring a unique perspective to Valley Women's Healthcare. I recall my own years of childbearing and raising children with great fondness. As a result, I work hard to support young families through pregnancy and childbirth, providing medical care while discussing breast feeding, the complexities of parenting, and marital challenges that inevitably arise.

Now that I am in mid-life myself, my interest in menopause and well woman care is increasingly acute! I encourage my patients to remember that midlife is not about looking younger, but rather about being healthy and vibrant as we grow in wisdom. I am interested in natural remedies and alternative therapies, particularly for midlife health issues. I appreciate my practice partners who provide surgical care for my obstetric and gynecologic patients when they need it.

I work part time so that I can remain active in the lives of my two sons who are in high school and travel to visit my college age son and daughter as often as they'll have me. I'm grateful to my husband, David Schumer MD, for his ongoing personal and professional support.

Dr. Maccio received her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and completed her residency at St. Joseph's Hospital.

    Biography

Jestine MacDonald, MD, is a family medicine physician at Valley Family Medicine. She was born and raised in Missoula, Montana. She graduated from University of Montana with a degree in biology and a minor in psychology. She then moved to Detroit, Michigan to teach high school biology. Her years as a high school teacher ignited her passion for social justice, and the resilience of her students inspired her commitment to underserved populations. Dr. MacDonald attended medical school at University of Washington where she quickly found a home in family medicine. Family medicine combines her passions for teaching, preventive health, obstetrics, reproductive health, and addiction medicine, among others. She is very grateful for the opportunity to train at the Valley Family Medicine Residency Program, an institution committed to full-spectrum family medicine and promoting health equity.

She loves to spend time with my family and friends, whether going to a concert, watching a movie or sporting event, or simply sharing a meal. She also enjoys the great outdoors, particularly with hiking and trail running.

    Biography

Leila Mende, MD, is a family medicine physician at Valley Family Medicine. She grew up in the small town of Mililani on the island of O’ahu in Hawai’i. Island living sparked her interest in environmental stewardship, social justice, and spending time in nature. From a very early age, she began learning how important the connections are between health, the environment, and our communities. She studied medicine at University of Kentucky in Lexington, the original home of the Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Mende is a second-generation family physician and always knew she wanted to pursue primary care and disease prevention. She was drawn to family medicine because of its moral imperative to not only improve the health of patients, but also the health of whole communities. She has particular interests in disease prevention, global health, and lifestyle medicine, and looks forward to future opportunities to provide obstetric care internationally. She is happy to call the Pacific Northwest her home again. In her free time, she enjoys being outdoors, climbing hiking, and paddling. She loves biking, music, dance, capoeira, and yoga.

    Biography

Brian Ostler, MD is a family medicine physician at Valley Family Medicine. After graduating from high school, he spent two years working as a missionary in Mexico City, where he learned Spanish and developed a love for helping others. These experiences drew him to medicine where he could work with patients to improve their quality of life. He later attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah to complete a bachelor’s degree in physics. It was here that he met his wife and they eventually had two children. They moved to Dallas, Texas so he could attend medical school at University of Texas. He spent a large amount of time in both private and community hospitals and was exposed to the social determinants of health. This expanded his interest in providing better care to the underserved as well as his love of different cultures and ways of life.

Dr. Ostler is thrilled to be working at Valley Medical Center, where he can continue to learn and provide the best care for all, including people with diverse backgrounds. Some of his special interests include obstetrics, pediatrics, addiction medicine, and integrative medicines. When he’s not taking care of patients, he spends as much time as possible with his wife and four children. He also enjoys exercising, cooking vegan meals, baking, hiking, biking, and playing any and all varieties of board and card games.
