    Biography

Jacare Cardoza, DO, is a family medicine physician at Valley Family Medicine. She spent her early childhood in California’s central valley, where her family worked in farming, before moving to Texas during her teenage years. She studied biology and psychology at St. Edward’s University, where she discovered her passion for science while doing research in molecular biology. After receiving her bachelor’s degree, she volunteered to teach English to newly relocated refugees and science to high-risk youth. She joined Teach for America, teaching science in middle school, and loved working with kids. These experiences helped her to recognize, and appreciate, the empowering gift of education. Working with underprivileged students ignited her passion to fight for justice and equality, a mission that she has carried with her to her practice of medicine. After four years of teaching she began medical school at A. T. Still University, pursuing family medicine.

Dr. Cardoza is happy to be training at Valley Medical Center and looks forward to caring for the diverse population of south Seattle. Her interests include pediatric medicine, substance use disorder, and community health. In her spare time, she enjoys drawing, crafting, and tending to her houseplants. She loves adventuring with her fiancé and their poodle.

    Biography

Wynne Chen, MD, is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary & critical care medicine, and sleep medicine. He joined Valley’s medical staff in 2006, practicing both in the Critical Care Center at Valley and the Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Clinic. He now practices exclusively outpatient adult sleep medicine.

Raised on the east coast, Dr. Chen studied at Dartmouth College where he majored in biology, concentrating in molecular genetics and graduating with distinction. He returned home to attend State University of New York at Stonybrook School of Medicine, and later completed his internal medicine residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. He moved to the west coast to pursue subspecialty fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine, as well as sleep Medicine at Stanford University Medical Center in California. As a postdoctoral fellow, his clinical research interests included the physiology behind sleep disordered breathing/OSAS, and functional neuroimaging in type 1 Narcolepsy. He is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and Seattle Met Magazine Top Doctor (2015, 2016). He has a strong interest in medical informatics, and outside of work, enjoys music, running and exploring the Puget Sound.

“We now know that common sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) spares no one, and afflicts the young and old alike, often without classic symptoms such as loud snoring or frank apneas. Indeed, OSAS in children can mimic ADHD, and fatigue and insomnia may herald the onset of sleep-disordered breathing among thin individuals. In diagnosing sleep disorders, I am gratified in helping patients fit the pieces together in the puzzle of symptoms that they often have struggled with for years. In the process, I also appreciate that related discussions about diet and promoting a healthy lifestyle, can further empower them to take greater responsibility for their present and future health. The best part of my job as a sleep physician is having the opportunity to meet interesting people every day and educate them about a vital part of their daily lives that is often overlooked – their sleep.”

    Biography

Dr. Nick Chen strives to help his patients understand the full range of treatment options, not only for their disease, but for their overall quality of life.

"Cancer patients often suffer from decreased appetite, weight loss and a host of other mental and physical problems," Nick says. "Their nutritional, mental and emotional states affect their immunity and overall outcome. It is quite clear that the treatment of cancer must involve an integration of all of these areas to be successful."

When medical doctors work side by side with naturopathic oncologists, practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, and mind-body specialists, Nick adds, the communication between team members is prompt, continuous and complete.

"The patient is the winner when everybody works together in a seamless integration of treatment," he says.

Board certified in medical oncology and internal medicine with a Ph.D. in immunology, Nick has provided patient care and studied medicine on three continents. He served hematology fellowships at University Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium and Shanghai Medical University in China and earned his Ph.D. in immunology from the University of Iowa.

He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and a fellowship in medical oncology at Moffitt Cancer Treatment Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida, one of the top comprehensive cancer centers in the nation.

Nick joined the integrative cancer treatment team at Seattle Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center in 2002.

He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology and the American Medical Association.

"Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormonal therapies and other medical treatments address the cancer head-on, while science-based complementary therapies help ease the side effects and improve the outcome," Nick explains.

Mind-body support and patient empowerment are also vital, he says.

"We can use our thoughts and emotions to help the body heal faster. The more involved the patient is in his or her treatment program, the better the patient will feel mentally and emotionally. When one moves from victim to victor, it is much easier to visualize and achieve success."

    Biography

Soumya Choudhury, MD, is a family medicine physician at Valley Family Medicine. She was born in India and moved to the United States with her family when she was very young, settling in Bellevue, Washington. Growing up as the daughter of two physicians, she learned the value of hard work and giving back to others at an early age. She attended Occidental College in Los Angeles, where she majored in cognitive science and volunteered teaching health workshops in local high schools. After college, she spent a year as an AmeriCorps member helping older adults at a day health center and another year working for the nonprofit Project Access Northwest in Seattle. These experiences helped her realize how much she cares about other’s health, and she decided to pursue medical school.

Dr. Choudhury chose family medicine for several reasons. She values close relationships and, through her work, seeks to develop meaningful bonds with her patients over a lifetime. Additionally, her previous volunteer work helped her to understand the importance of social determinants of health, which are best addressed in primary care. Most of all, she hopes to keep her patients happy and healthy in the community, regardless of who they are, their age or background. She is thrilled to return to the Pacific Northwest and complete her training at Valley Medical Center. In her spare time, she loves being outdoors, hiking, running, camping, swimming and biking. She also loves food, whether that means trying out a new restaurant or cooking at home with her partner.
