Valley Family Medicine Clinic consists of a team of family physicians and staff dedicated to providing you and your family the best primary care medical services possible. So just what is a family physician? A family physician is a doctor who specializes in you and your family, who strives to know you well, understand your values, and help you get what you want out of life without being sidelined by illness.

Family doctors take care of everyone in the family: babies, toddlers, teens, adults (both young and not so young), and pregnant women. In order to care for so many different types of people, they have to know how to provide a wide range of services. In addition to helping their patients with their common medical illnesses, they also give prenatal care, deliver babies, and provide preventive services including all vaccines from birth to 99+ years of age.

At Valley Family Medicine Clinic, the family doctors can perform minor skin procedures, vasectomies, IUD insertion (and removal), flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colposcopy. They also continue to care for their patients who need hospitalization at Valley Medical Center or need to transition into a nursing home. They also make house calls.

One of the key beliefs at Valley Family Medicine Clinic is that it is better to prevent illness than to wait until after someone becomes ill. So the Valley Family Medicine Clinic team focuses on helping patients eat right, exercise, and give up smoking and other unhealthy habits. However, when an illness does strike, someone from your care team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide fast and effective care. Unfortunately, some conditions, such as diabetes or heart failure, cannot be cured. For people struggling with these diseases, extra attention is given to help keep the body and spirit in balance and maximize the potential for a long and productive life.

Valley Family Medicine Clinic is the clinic operated by Valley Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency. The residency program is affiliated with the University of Washington School of Medicine, rated the best primary care medical school in the United States since 1993. The physicians at Valley Family Medicine Clinic come from all over the country, attracted by the residency's commitment to provide the best possible care to you. Since they are backed by the residency, doctors in Valley Family Medicine Clinic's practice can spend more time with you, quickly access the most up-to-date medical knowledge, and obtain instant input from pharmacists, psychologists, geriatricians, or UW faculty physicians as needed. Does that really make our services better? You bet it does! Valley Family Medicine Clinic's diabetes management, smoking cessation, and child vaccine rates exceed the national and regional averages, and the doctors' low C-section delivery rates "exceed best practices."

We are proud to serve you, your family, and the community in which we all live.

    Biography

I am a PNW newbie hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah! Growing up as a moody arts-lover, with a bit of a contrarian streak, I found my way to medicine only after realizing its fundamental interconnection with the humanities. I completed my undergraduate education at Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Philosophy (one major!), and a minor in Text and Traditions. From there, I moved to Arlington, VA where I worked for a year as a medical assistant, and then headed back home to Salt Lake City for medical school. I knew I was destined for family medicine after considering careers in internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics; my passion for family medicine stems from its dedication to the entirety of existence. Infinitely fascinated by the human experience, I seek to understand life at the intersections of art and science.

Outside of medicine I find joy in: hiking, reading, face masks, good playlists, snacking, and window shopping. I’m overjoyed to be continuing my education and my past times in the greater Seattle area with the Valley Medical Center team.

    Biography

I was born in Seattle, WA, and grew up in the beautiful state capital, Olympia. I attended the University of Washington for my undergraduate education, where I earned my mathematics degree while completing research in biostatistics. Having spent most of my life in the Greater Seattle area, it was only natural that I fell in love with the community and culture. Even from a young age, I dreamed of serving my community as a medical professional. With much love and support from my family and friends, I set off to Yakima, WA to pursue this dream by attending medical school at Pacific Northwest University.

I chose family medicine because of the impact that family doctors had on my upbringing. Throughout my life, primary care physicians have been my caregivers, role models, mentors, and community leaders. The diversity of challenges family doctors face, as well as their focus on preventative and longitudinal care, are what truly resonate with me. I am excited to be a part of the Valley Family Medicine team, where I can learn and grow with other professionals who share these passions. My special interests within medicine include obstetrics, teaching, addiction medicine, and addressing social determinants of health.

Outside of the healthcare setting, you can find me playing board games and video games with friends, practicing violin, playing tennis, or dressing up my two cats and taking pictures of them.

My desire to pursue the medical field was solidified after I encountered the lack of access to healthcare in the setting of immense poverty while visiting family in China and realizing that communities at home also suffered from the same disparities. I graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a degree in Physiology and spent 2 gap years doing research on the epigenetics of kidney disease, scribing and volunteering. I was fortunate to attend University of Washington Medical School where there was special focus placed on the importance of primary care.

Through the WWAMI program, I was able to experience the breadth of family medicine from rural to urban and found that I particularly enjoyed full spectrum care. I decided to pursue family medicine because I valued longitudinal relationships with patients, and I seemed to like to do a bit of everything. I am particularly passionate about preventative medicine, women’s health, obstetrics and working with communities who have been left behind by our healthcare system.

I am so excited to be a part of the Valley Family Medicine Residency Program and look forward to learning from everyone how we can best serve our community. I enjoy playing violin and hope to join a community orchestra someday. I also like: baking, crocheting, swimming and exploring all the Pacific Northwest has to offer! Oh, and I love cats!

    Biography

I grew up in the busy city of Saigon, where I was surrounded by motorbikes, delicious food - street and homemade - and small, hidden neighborhoods with a vibe not unlike the small provincial town in Beauty and the Beast. I attended UCLA, where I studied psychobiology, with minors in Early Childhood Education and Asian American Studies. After college, I completed a year of AmeriCorps service at Roxhill Elementary in SW Seattle, alongside a team of superhumans who challenged me to work hard, dream bravely, and advocate for others. I was welcomed into a beloved community, who continued to nurture and help me find my home in the PNW. Attending medical school in Arizona, I had the fortune to work on the Navajo reservation, which truly opened my eyes to community-based primary care and rural medicine. I became especially interested in health inequity, geriatric care, women's health, and obstetrics. The comprehensive, community-based training with emphasis on obstetrics drew me to Valley Family Medicine, as I hope to continue on to full-spectrum practice in the future.

I enjoy browsing bookstores, visiting national parks, and learning new things about different cultures. If I were a television program, I would be sponsored by coffee, vegetables, and gourmet ramen noodles. What brings me joy currently is thinking about planting tomatoes, digging for clams, and getting to care for my new patients.

Theresa Wertin, MD, is a family medicine physician at Valley Family Medicine. She grew up in the Kansas City area, and moved to St Louis, Missouri to complete her degree in Spanish and attend medical school at Saint Louis University. She volunteered as an interpreter at a local clinic and worked as a caregiver during her free time. She chose family medicine as her specialty because of the opportunity to see patients of all ages and develop lasting relationships. The emphasis on treating illness and maintaining wellness is important to her.

Dr. Wertin loves being at Valley Family Medicine and cannot imagine being elsewhere. She has found not only excellent training in primary care, inpatient medicine, and obstetrics, but also developed incredible connections with patients and lifelong friendships with colleagues. Establishing continuity with patients during residency has been an especially rewarding experience and she hopes to continue practicing office-based primary care for all ages in the Puget Sound area. Outside of medicine, you can find her cooking, trying out a local restaurant, tending to her houseplants or garden, or exploring a new hiking trail with her partner her two fluffy dogs. She is happy to live in the Pacific Northwest after spending her entire life in the Midwest.

    Biography

I’m originally from West Lafayette, Indiana - home of Purdue University, Fort Ouiatenon, and lots of corn! I originally thought that I would become a teacher, an engineer, or a zoologist, before I realized I could satisfy all of my passions within medicine. I studied Biochemistry at Indiana University, in Bloomington, before attending IU School of Medicine, where I fell in love with family medicine because of its emphasis on comprehensive, well-rounded patient care, variety, and long-term patient-provider relationships.

I love meeting new people, solving challenging problems, and being conscious about making the world a little better than it was, so I feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to do all that every day, and especially to be able to do it in the beautiful and unique Pacific Northwest! I’m particularly interested in caring for patients of all ages, including pediatric and palliative care, as well as point-of-care ultrasound and global medicine, and I still aim to incorporate teaching and mentorship into my daily and future practice.

Outside of medicine, I enjoy spending time with my fiancée, Deb, no matter what we do! I especially love traveling, hiking, getting to know the local wildlife, and trying new foods (I have a weakness for Vietnamese, Korean, and ice cream). When I’m not outdoors, I like to play board games and video games, watch movies, and dole out obscure trivia.
