We are pleased to announce a new, more efficient process sponsored by Dr. Keith Chan for ordering IR Procedures. This work has been more than twelve months in the making and includes input from many of you, and other clinical staff, as well as IT and Informatics.

This new process addresses some long-time pain points. The goal is to advance accuracy of ordered procedures, minimize rework and patient rescheduling, and improve patient satisfaction. These goals will ensure that Valley continues to care for our community like family.

Below are a few frequently asked questions:

When is this new process launching?
The new ordering process will be available on June 22. The old ordering process will remain available until June 29 to allow providers to adjust to the new process. Current IR procedure orders will be removed from all Epic Preference Lists when the new ones are deployed.

What are the advantages?

  • Improve pre-procedural planning for indication, sedation, and technique
  • Reduce risk of improperly ordered lab tests
  • Prevent miscommunication of procedural expectations
  • Increase overall ease-of-use for ordering providers

What does the new process look like?

There will be a total of eight IR Order Sets/SmartSets.

  1. Outpatient Order Sets
  2. Inpatient Order Sets
  3. Easy to find: Simply search for “IR” or use synonyms such as “nephrostomy”, “CVC”, “hickman”, “PEG”, “chole”, “biopsy” or “UAE”

What if the needed procedure is not on the Order Set/SmartSet list?

Enter an “IR Consult” and the IR team will determine the procedure and approach based on clinical need.

Examples:

  • Vascular interventions
  • Tumor biopsies or interventions
  • IVC filters, foreign body retrievals
  • Placement of new drains or tubes, such as for abscess, gastrostomy, nephrostomy, chest tube, etc.
