He returned back home to attend Nova Southeastern University for his medical degree. Before medical school he volunteered abroad in rural Honduras and spent six months doing ecology research in Ecuador, which involved catching numerous Amazonian snakes, lizards, and frogs. He also spent time working in the research department at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami.

Dr. Shum has been interested in helping under-served populations since his days in medical school. This interest in health care disparities led him to spend time at several federally-qualified community health centers in and around South Florida. There, he learned how important patient advocacy, coordination of care, and cultural competency can influence patient outcomes. This interest continued throughout his time at UW Medicine | Valley Medical Center where he completed his residency in family medicine. His other professional interests include pediatrics, general family medicine, and LGBTQ+ health.

When he’s not in the clinic or hospital, he enjoys camping, reading fiction, spending time with friends and family, heading to the beach, and traveling.
